George and Bernard's Big Wish

George Halbert and Bernard Ushaw live at The Manor House Whickham and both worked on the railways. They recently enjoyed their Big Wish together on a steam train trip from one of the world’s oldest train stations, Tanfield Railway Station.

George was a train driver and used to drive the Scotland to London line. He relocated from Morpeth to Whickham to be closer to Newcastle station where he was working. During George’s career he was also a driver of the Flying Scotsman on its journey from Newcastle to Edinburgh.

Bernard was also a train driver and began driving steam trains after following in his father’s footsteps. Bernard said he loved seeing the beautiful scenery on his routes and was accompanied by his wife on a couple of occasions.

Their journey from Tanfield Railway Station took them on a six-mile, hour long round trip through beautiful scenery on a preserved British steam locomotive named as 2859. Both gentleman thoroughly enjoyed reminiscing together as they travelled.
