Miss Irene Atkin Celebrates Her 100th Birthday

A former headteacher at Haigh Road Infant School, Rothwell celebrated her 100th birthday on 29 November.

Miss Irene Atkin became headteacher at Haigh Road in 1952 bringing her particular expertise in teaching reading, writing and arithmetic, and retired 29 years later. After retiring Miss Atkin travelled extensively.

Christmas at the Manor Houses

As the festive season draws closer Hadrian Healthcare homes are planning many special events to celebrate, from community carols to Christmas Fayres with gift stalls and tombolas.

Wetherby Manor Head Chef Oliver Takes to the Skies for Charity

Wetherby Manor care home head chef Oliver Smith has taken part in a skydive to raise money for the Alzheimer’s Society and The Food Chain.

Oliver is no stranger to extreme sports as he used to be a keen snowboarder but this was his first skydive. He was part of a five-strong team from the National Association of Care Catering (NACC) who each took a tandem skydive from 10,000ft including a 45 second free fall.

Oulton Manor Takes Part in the Leeds Memory Walk

A team of residents, staff and volunteers from Oulton Manor completed the Leeds Memory Walk on Saturday 24th September in the beautiful parkland of Temple Newsam.

Around 3,500 people took part in the event which was organised by the Alzheimer’s Society. The course is fairly hilly featuring a mix of terrain with roads, footpaths and grass and many stunning views along the way.

Macmillan Cake Off at Oulton Manor

Competition was in the air at the Oulton Manor Macmillan Cancer Support coffee morning on 30 September as residents, relatives and staff had baked cakes for a ‘cake off’.

Head chef Judith Huby was the judge and she had a very difficult task narrowing down the wide range of scrumptious entries.

A Wild West coffee morning has raised £135 for Macmillan Cancer Support at The Manor House Knaresborough.

Residents and staff invited family, friends and the community to join them for a cuppa and fabulous cakes and scones made in The Manor House kitchen on Friday 30 September.

Yorkshire in Bloom Award Hat-trick For Wetherby Manor

Wetherby Manor in Wetherby has scooped three awards at this year's Yorkshire in Bloom competition. The outstanding achievement - a gold award and category winner in the Public and Private Establishments category and a discretionary Yorkshire Rose Community Award (Small Groups) - follows a gold award last year.

The judges described the gardens as ‘a total joy’ and said ‘words just cannot describe the beautiful layout of flowers, sustainable planting, hanging baskets’. They also commented that they could not find any areas to improve on, as the commitment and enthusiasm of the staff, gardeners and management were plain to see.

Oulton Manor Attends Reception at Leeds Civic Hall

Oulton Manor lifestyle coordinator Kim Eames and residents Eileen Rothera and Audrey Thackery attended a civic reception at Leeds Civic Hall on 18 August, celebrating the Tea Cosy Cafe in Rothwell and work to make Rothwell and Oulton a more dementia friendly community.

The event was hosted by The Lord Mayor of Leeds, Councillor Gerry Harper and The Lady Mayoress, Miss Lynne Scholes. Guests were invited by Peter Smith BEM, the founder of the Tea Cosy Cafe and community dementia champion.

Oulton Manor Links With The Tea Cosy Memory Cafe

Oulton Manor care home, which provides residential and dementia care for elderly people, has linked up with the Tea Cosy Memory Cafe in Rothwell to share events.

The monthly cafe was set up by local volunteer dementia champions Peter and Liz Smith almost five years ago. They became interested in the care of people with dementia after taking care of Peter’s mother who was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease and then vascular dementia.

Hadrian Healthcare Group Joins NACC

Head chefs at all Hadrian Healthcare Group’s care homes are now members of the National Association of Care Catering (NACC). This gives them access to specialist resources, guidance, events and training to share with their teams.

The luxury elderly care provider has previously carried out research with Northumbria University to optimise its homes’ seasonal menus for nutrition and hydration, and Hadrian Healthcare chefs have won the NACC Care Cook of the Year competition three times.

Sun Shines on The Manor House Gosforth Summer Fayre

The Manor House care home in Gosforth held their annual Summer Fayre on Saturday 16 June.

With a whole range of fun activities from ‘Splat the Rat’ to a penalty shoot out, stalls, tombolas, face painting and guessing games as well as a raffle, refreshments and Pimms Garden there was something for everyone, whatever their age, to enjoy.

Double Celebration Day At The Manor House

The Manor House care home in Barnard Castle celebrated the Queen’s 90th birthday and national Care Home Open Day together in style with guest of honour the Mayor of Barnard Castle Councillor John Blissett.

The event had a street party theme with bunting and homemade afternoon tea served on vintage china. Music was provided by violin and guitar duo Charlotte Kennedy and Harry Murrell. Activities included creative sessions with flower arranger Eunice Tate and artist Michael Horner and a fun pompom Oomph! exercise class led by care assistant Katie Richards.

Lucy Joins The Manor House Knaresborough

Hadrian Healthcare Group has appointed Lucy Gradwell as manager for The Manor House care home in Knaresborough.

Lucy, from Harrogate, began her career as a care assistant. She has worked her way up through various care roles to manager gaining experience in nursing, residential and dementia care settings and taking every opportunity for training along the way.

Football Legend Visits The Manor House Whickham

Football legend Peter Beardsley visited residents at The Manor House Whickham for homemade afternoon tea.

Newcastle born Peter trained at Wallsend Boys’ Club and played for Newcastle United twice. Peter appeared for England 59 times, once as Captain and was inducted into the English Football Hall of Fame in 2007.
